3 More Down…

Unfortunetely, not all of the baptisms went down. Martha didn’t end up getting baptised this last friday but maybe this saturday. The baptisms of Pedro, Selvin and Sergio did go through. It was a great day!

We have two baptisms planned for this coming saturday so hopefully they all go as planned. One with a man named Excel and then this lady named Blanka. With Excel its a little ify. He knows the church is true and wants to be baptised but there is a problem (like they always has to be).

In his case, hes been together with his women for over 15 years and have just never been married (which is the Guatemala custom). Now, he has no problem getting married so he could be baptised BUT his wife goes to another church and her Priest will not let her get married to him if he is not going to be part of their same faith. Ugh, so much garbage we still need to straighten out. We will figure it out though. So thats the low down on what we are going to be working with this coming week.

This is Jeramias. The kid is so cool! He wants to be a missionary someday, so he goes visiting from time to time for practice.

Grandpa Sid says:
Glad to hear about your baptisms. However, don’t fret about the investigator who wants to be baptised, but whose wife’s sacerdote won’t let her be married if it is out of the catholic church. Just be resourceful and rtemember some of the stories I told you about my experiences in the Indian villiages of Guatemala. The first case kind of set the pattern for the rest. We found a little book of Guatemalan laws and marked pertinent passages. We found that the biggest reason why the indiginas were not marrying was that the sacerdotes charged Q5.00 to perform the ceremony and the alclade charged Q2.00. (Qi=S1 in those days.) Either amount was a great burden to the men who only earned Q.50 a day working in the fields from 0530 to 1830 every day. In Patzicia we took a couple to the alcaldia so that the alcalde could marry them. I paid the Q2.00, but asked for a receipt so that I could report my expenses to my mission president. The clerk very obliginly sat down and typed out a receipt on a piece of notebook paper which the alcalde signed. I then demanded my money back showing him the law which required all receipt be on paper which bore the watermark of the ewcudo notional, holding the paper up to the light and saying thet I could not see any watermark at all. I also showed him the law which said that the alcalde could not charge for wedding ceremonies and that the punishment for doing so was a fine of Q300.00, imprisionment for five years and a prohibition of ever holding any public office any where in the republic for the rest of his life. Now do I get my money back plus your promis to never again charge these people for performing their weddings, or do I go to the military govenor in Chimaltenango and let him know whst has been happening here? I immediately got my money back and as long as I was in the Chimaltenango District we were never again charged for weddings. Keep up the good work!
